Marcello Caetano, Portugal's Prime Minister is overthrown on April 25, 1974 and later had to fly to be exiled in Brazil.
Portuguese colonial rule over many countries ends after a coup removes the government in Portugal. Angola attains official independence on November 11, 1975.
Angola was left with both economic and social difficulties which turned into a power struggle between the three prominent liberation movements ( The People’s Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA), National Liberation Front of Angola (FNLA), and National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA) ).
Conflict between the three parties occur. For example, FNLA is forced out of Luanda, the capital, by the MPLA.
Support for UNITA is increased by military assistance from the USA. Additionally, support for the MPLA is also increased by the Soviet Union, Cuba and other Eastern nations.
Finally, after lots of fighting, the death of Jonas Svimbi at the hands of the Angolan government lead to the UNITA and the MPLA sign a ceasefire agreement.
