  • Marcello Caetano, Portugal's Prime Minister is overthrown on April 25, 1974 and later had to fly to be exiled in Brazil.
  • Portuguese colonial rule over many countries ends after a coup removes the government in Portugal. Angola attains official independence on November 11, 1975.
  • Angola was left with both economic and social difficulties which turned into a power struggle between the three prominent liberation movements ( The People’s Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA), National Liberation Front of Angola (FNLA), and National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA) ).
  • Conflict between the three parties occur. For example, FNLA is forced out of Luanda, the capital, by the MPLA.
  • Support for UNITA is increased by military assistance from the USA.  Additionally, support for the MPLA is also increased by the Soviet Union, Cuba and other Eastern nations. 
  • Finally, after lots of fighting, the death of Jonas Svimbi at the hands of the Angolan government lead to the UNITA and the MPLA sign a ceasefire agreement.
