There is a boy named Jonas who is an Eleven who has his mom, dad, and sister, Lily. They are having dinner together and after their dinner, they start talking about their feelings to each other.
Jonas tells his family that he feels apprehensive about the Ceremony of Twelve, where the new twelves receive their life assignments. Father and Mother had a private talk about the Ceremony of Twelve with Jonas. Father recalls and tells Jonas about his own Ceremony of Twelve.
Father's job is a Nurturer and he adores one of the babies he is taking care of. He brings the baby home and had told his family that his name is Gabriel and that Father calls him that in secret.
Jonas rides his bicycle to the House of the Old to go do volunteer hours. He finds Asher's (his best friend) and Fiona's (his crush) bicycles there too. He checks in the front office and goes to bath an elderly named Larissa, whom he asks questions and talks to.
The next day, Jonas and his family tell about their dreams. Jonas rarely dreams but had one last night, therefore, he told his family. His dream was that he and Fiona were at the House of the Old and Jonas wanted to bathe her. This type of dream was called a Stirring and Mother told Jonas to take a pill which suppresses it.
At the ceremony of Twelve, the Chief Elder calls the elevens by birth order to give their assignments. When it is Jonas's turn, the Chief Elder skips him, but when she is done, she tells the audience that he has been selected to be the next Receiver of Memory.
