  • and the hours are too long.
  • you would have to work at a plantation, run by rich white people.
  • No matter what age or gender,
  • ...With help and belief of the drinking gourd from up above
  • But eventually, they knew that someday they would be free.
  • Ever since me and Liza have met on the Riley plantation, we shared dreams about the land of Canada,
  • a place without any slavery, and where coloured and white folks could live together in peace.
  • Other slaves would say that Canada is a cruel, cold place where only black-eyes peas live.
  • But I didn't care.
  • and be free.
  • Whatever let me and Liza to freedom, away from slavery, we were going to make the treacherous journey.
  • To get the one hundred pounds of cotton off of the backs of slaves,
