On May 13, 1862, Smalls hid his family and 12 other slaves on the Confederate Ship called the Planter and sailed it to the Union harbor. He was known for this daring escape for freedom.
After his escape, Robert Smalls persuaded Abraham Lincoln to allow African Americans to join the Union. He went on a speaking to recruit people to join.

After the Civil War, he decided to join politics. He ran for the U.S. Congress in South Carolina and defeated the independent J.P.M. Epping.
