Guy Montag is a fireman who doesn't put out fires, but starts them. His society burns books. This takes place in a futuristic city.
"I'm antisocial, they say. I don't mix. It's so strange. I'm very social indeed. It all depends on what you mean by social, doesn't it? Social to me means talking to you about things like this."
Guy meets Clarrise, a 17 year old girl who had interesting thoughts, remarks, and questions about life.
Over the next few days strange things happen. Clarrise is killed by a speeding car and his wife, Mildred, attempts suicide by swallowing a bottle of pills.
"The value of books lies in the detailed awareness of life that they contain."
Montag goes to talk to a retired english professor, Faber about the importance of books. Faber tells Montag to read, and he does.
Montag is caught with books in his house and is betrayed by Mildred. He is forced to burn down his own house, but instead turns on the fire chief, Beatty. He kills Beatty and knocks the others unconscious. A mechanical hound was set off by Beatty to go catch Montag. Montag fights the hound off and goes on the run, and tries to think of ways to clear his scent.
Montag escapes the madness, changes into Faber's clothes and floats down a river until he comes across some men, one in particular is Granger. They also love books. Montag becomes friends with them and they set off the rebuild a new civilization while all chaos has broke lose in Montag's old town.
