The Kansas - Nebraska Act
Stephen Douglas is talking with a representative from the government to talk about The Kansas - Nebraska Act which will divide Kansas and Nebraska into two different areas.
With Kansas splitting from Nebraska, many settlers came to Kansas looking for new land, food, and animals.
The town of Lawrence was founded by antislavery settlers. Proslavery settlers called them traitors and sent 800 men to arrest them. They ended up burning down the headquarters, houses, and stores.
Because proslavery settlers burned down Lawrence, John Brown, an abolitionist who is antislavery, stabbed and killed 5 proslavery men. This started the "Bleeding Kansas."
Charles Sumner, the senator of Massachusetts, wrote a speech called "The Crime Against Kansas." He attacked his friends for being proslavery.
Preston Brooks, Andrew Butler's nephew, read Sumner's speech and was angered by it which led to him hitting Sumner in the head repeatedly. The Southerners were happy about this.
