  • Rome was surrounded by 7 hills, offering a natural defensive barrier.  Rome was also on a river: the Tiber River. Giving early settlers access to fresh water for drinking and bathing, as well as a waterway for trade. Rome grew rapidly 
  • Art/Architecture  
  • The Romans established a republic, a government in which citizens elected representatives to rule on their behalf. A republic is quite different from a democracy, in which every citizen is expected to play an active role in governing the state. Augustus was the first emperor of Rome. As well as Trajan
  • Engineering 
  • The social structure of ancient Rome was based on heredity, property, wealth, citizenship and freedom. It was also based around men: women were defined by the social status of their fathers or husbands. Women were expected to look after the houses and very few had any real jobs to do.
  • Religion 
  • The monumental arch was constructed in 203 CE in recognition of unprecedented Roman victories over the Parthians in the dying years of 2nd century CE.
  •  Rome’s first aqueduct, the Aqua Appia in 312 BCE. As soon as the second century BCE, the Romans built large and magnificent stone bridges such as the 135 meter (443 ft) long Pons Aemilius in Rome.
  • Temples to worship the gods were built throughout the Roman Empire. Temples usually always followed the same building pattern. The roof was triangular shaped and supported by great pillars. Steps led up to the main doorway that was usually built behind the pillars. The inside of the temple would have been very well decorated and there would have been a statue of the god in it
