This scene took place in the hero's ordinary world. He was just a baby when he killed two snakes and proved to be different. From then on, everybody knew that Hercules was a boy destined to be a hero.
This part of the story was the call for adventure. Hera brought madness upon Hercules and lead him to kill his beloved family. Hercules was feeling great regret, and he was given 12 tasks to expiate the deaths of his family.
This part of the story was meeting with the mentor. Hercules was sent to Eurystheus by the oracle priestess to relieve his regret.
Death is not the answer.
After meeting with a mentor, Hercules has finally crossed the threshold by taking on his first task of killing a Nemean lion with his bare hands.
This part of the story was the ordeal because this was the worst task of all. He was to bring Cerberus, the three-headed dog, up from the Underworld. He had the limitation of only using his hands for this final task.
