During Christmas time, the Archbishop sent a message for all the chief men in London "Whoso can draw forth this sword, is the rightful King of Britain born". Each man all gave it a try, yet the sword failed to move an inch. The Archbishop dismissed the men and appointed guards to watch over the stone.
Sir Ector and Kay were on their way to the tournament, but Kay had left his sword at home. Arthur immediately rushed back, and saw the house was shut; he remembered saw a sword before the cathedral. Arthur then easily drew the sword out without using any strength.
