Kashmir was hotly contested by India and Pakistan since before 1947, and even when Kashmir decided to accede to india, it was warred over by Pakistan and India.
Kashmir's citizens did not want to be governed by India, and if they were, they would be the only Indian state with Muslim people as the majority. Violence and unemployment have worsened the issue between the countries.
Why can't we just have our own land?
India and Pakistan eventually agreed to ceasefire in 2003, but with a new Indian government in 2014 came a promise to protect heartily against Pakistan. There have been more protests and attacks since, and international raids have followed.
