Southern USA, clove of seasons.The narrator's little brother, Doodle, is born with disabilities and health conditions (caul). Doodle’s oleder brother doesn’t accept his brother's physical challenges, and is very embarrassed and ashamed of him.
Doodle's brother tries to teach Doodle to be “normal”. Once Doodle walks, he believes it is possible to teach Doodle other things such as swimming etc....
One day during summer, they find a scarlet ibis that dies in-front of them . Doodle develops a connection with this bird and buries it .
On the last day of training(before school starts), Doodle shows that he's weak to continue training and collapses . Doodle's brother is upset, they decide to go home,however, a thunderstorm is awaiting them.
Doodle's brother begins running home, and leaves his little brother behind, Doodle starts calling out for his brother“Brother don’t leave me.” However, his brother doesn’t turn around and continues running.
BROTHER wait don't leave me!

Doodle's older brother turns to go back to his brother, and finds him laying down dead . Doodle's brother recalls how his selfish pride killed Doodle. Doodle ran to death by his well-meaning but self-absorbed older brother.
