This story about astronauts was so interesting! I want to be an astronaut when I grow up!
Eileen Collins went home and immediately started researching about space and went on to study it throughout high school and college until she graduated.
She earned her degrees in mathematics and economics in 1978 from Syracuse University!
Eileen joined the Air Force and within her first month of training, she was visited by the newest class of astronauts- the first to include women.
After this experience, I knew what I wanted to do. I wanted to fly the space shuttle.
Collins was waiting on pins and needles for her first mission to begin! She was part of the STS-63 in the discovery shuttle. The duration of the mission was a little over 6 days.
And just like that she started her first mission living her dream as the first woman shuttle operator. In the words of Collins herself, "I would like to see more people travel to space someday. I would like to see space tourism blossom. It's such as incredible experience."
