  • "Such was the end of Tom Walker and his ill-gotten health. Let all griping money brokers lay this story to heart." The author does not respect what Tom Walker did in order to earn money and he doesn't want the reader to either.

  • "Tom's wife was a tall termagant, fierce of character, loud of tongue, and strong of arm." The author does not like Tom's wife, which is why he speaks so negatively of her and uses strong words such as "termagant," and "fierce."
  • Word Choice
  • "They lived in a forlorn-looking house that stood alone, and had an air of starvation. A few straggling saven trees, emblems of sterility, grew near it; no smoke ever curled from its chimney." The author paints a picture of a home of people who are lonely and sad.
  • Imagery
  • The author uses their own style to make the style unique. The imagery paints the picture as well as the style. The author uses the style to create a well developed story.
  • Style
  • The theme of the Tom Walker passage is greed. Tom is a very greedy man in the beginning of the story, he stole and wasn't very nice. Toward the end of the of the story he decides to change, he goes to church and carries around a bible.

  • The story of Tom Walker relates to the Puritan notes because the puritans were people who were greedy just like Tom. The two are very similar in the fact that they are both very greedy.
