The play begins with the deaths of two men. The narator tells us that they were twins but were seperated at birth and they never knew they shared the same surname JHONESTONE.
Despite bieng 25 shes a mohter of 7.. she is no pregannt again and cant even afford the basics of life but a new job as a cleaner for a wealthy women( Mrs lyons ) changes her life she on the other hand is a strong contrast the the jhonstone family.
finding out she is expecting twins means social services putting pressure on her to put her children in to care. Mrs jhonstone in awe of the Lyon's wealth and possibility of a comfortable upbringing agrees to give one away. They make a vow of silence and swear on the bible
mrs Jhonstone still works but mrs Lyons feels uncomfrtable thinks shes becoming too attached Mrs Lyons terrifies her with a superstitious omen: if they find out they will die so mrs Jhonstone leaves and stop working at her house
after seven years they meet for the first time they learn they have the same birthday they become blood brothers. Mrs Jhonstone realises tells Edward to never come back similarly so does mrs Lyons and says to not mix with boys like that
Mrs lyons knows that Edward will be drawn into friendship with mickey she is afraid of the consequences after the incident with the police. The lyons move away to the country soon the Jhonstone are re housed by the council she is thrilled dances and sings
