Each person in this society has an AI companion that helps make every decision for them to best keep them healthy. When out in public, a headset is worn. This AI controls the government because it makes decisions for the good of the people individually and as a whole. The AI will match up couples based on how their kids will benefit society.
Meeting of the Mentor
During a storm, the AI glitches and he meets someone the AI wouldn't normally allow him to meet. They hit it off and want to get to know each other more, but the AI is trying to persuade them to never meet again.
Crossing the Threshold
The AI insists that he never attempt to see her again, and he almost believes it. But he starts to question why he can't see her and starts to think through the situation critically.
Tests, Allies, and Enemies.
As a rebellion, he decides to watch an old movie he found in his basement. In the film, the characters have free will and don't have someone looking over their shoulder and whispering in their ear. He realizes how trapped he is in this society.
The next day, he decides to leave the house without the headset that the AI communicates with and hang out with his new friend, who is also without the AI. He was going to go through his whole day making his own decisions, just like the characters in the movie he watched.
Throughout his day without the AI, they face many challenges. For example, he has trouble deciding what food to order because the AI usually made that choice for him. All along the way, random people would ask about his headset and why he wasn't wearing it.
