As a boy, Christopher Columbus lived with his parents, and 4 siblings. His father was a wool merchant.
When he was 13 years old, he got a job on a merchant ship. He learned how to navigate during the process, but the ship was attacked by the French. He made his way to the closest town and started making a plan to become rich.
How dare you attack my ship!
Columbus tried to persuade many officials to fund him, and the only people that were willing were King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain. He told them that he would sail west and get to China in 2,000 miles.
Columbus finally set sail in 1492. He had three ships: the Niña, the Pinta, and the Santa Maria. After a long time of sailing, Columbus finally reached the Bahamas. However, Columbus thought that he had reached India.
I'm not too sure about that...
After many voyages, Columbus' boats were too leaky. This caused them to stay on the island and to wait an year until being rescued by a different ship. When Columbus finally sailed back to Spain, he was too sick and died in 1506.
How am I ever going to get back?
Many other explorers followed after him, such as John Cabot. The explorers did find out much more about the world, but Christopher Columbus also did leave poor treatment to the Native Americans.
Thanks to Columbus, we can explore this new world and harvest all its materials! I shall claim this land for my country!
