I'm Dred Scott, I have been a slave in Virginia all my life and I'm going to sue for my family's freedom
Blacks were property and not citizens. You can't deny citizens the right to property. This case enraged the North to more anti-slavery support.
Dred Scott traveled to free states, Illinois and Wisconsin. He sued his owner, John Sanford, for traveling to free states and not freeing him.
In 1857, the case Dred Scott vs. Sanford was open. They went to several state courts but ended up going to the Supreme Court. Supreme Court Chief Justice Roger, that supported slavery, was the judge. After all, Dred Scotts case was denied.
This case is denied! NEXT!
No black person in America could be a citizen so he didn't have the right to sue. The Missouri Compromise is unconstitutional because you can't take property away from no one.
You have the right to Life, Liberty, and Property
Obviously this didn't help slavery none. Abolitionists convinced others to rise against slavery by newspaper, books, and speeches. This was just one step closer to the civil war.
