  • "The Ordinary World"
  • "The Call of Adventure"
  • "Refusal of the Call"
  • Our young hero Liesel Meminger is forced to deal with the death of her brother and loses her mother in a short period of time. This causes Liesel complete grief. "Still in disbelief, she started to dig. He couldn't​ be dead. "A final, soaking farewell was let go of, and they turned and left the cemtery, looking back several times."
  • "Meeting With the Mentor"
  • Liesel is tempted to steal books from the celebration fire for Hitler because she blames Hitler for her parent's​ death. She finds three books but takes one. This only makes her want to steal more. "The book felt cool enough to slip inside her uniform." Page 121
  • "Crossing the Threshold​"
  • Liesel is brought into Ilsa's house and she begins to look at all the books available but is afraid that she shouldb't be here and wants to resist the urge to read the books. "How many books had she felt? How man had she felt?' Page 135
  • "Tests and Enemies"
  • A Jewish man comes to the Hubermann house which makes big changes for their household. They are now in a life and death situation. Liesel is afraid of what will happen next. But she can't help but admire Max. "Max Vandenburg, the Jew, closed his eyes and drooped a little further into safety." Page 185​
  • Liesel begins to steal more and more things from lots of people including apples, meat, and books from Ilsa Herman. She loves to steal. "Stealing it, in a sick kind of sense, was like earning it." Page 287
  • Liesel's courage and strength is tested when she has to flee her house leaving everything behind including Max to get to safety from bombs. This is hard for Liesel because she fears her life and Max's . "Are you thinking about him, too?" Page 376
