Storyboard Text

  • I am very committed to seeing change. This government is terrible!
  • The next morning...
  • Today, spite our contradictions we must be liberal in order to create new compromises that will aid with our government.
  • How about the Virginia Plan? Representation will depend on population.
  • States whether large or small should have equal representation.
  • Connecticut
  • The Articles of Confederation, the original constitution of the U.S., was a failure.
  • NONSENSE! SLAVES ARE PROPERTY!
  • SLAVES SHALL COUNT IN THE POPULATION!
  • GENTLEMAN! TO MAKE THIS FAIR.. ONLY 3/5 OF YOUR SLAVES WILL GO TOWARDS YOUR POPULATION.
  • Delegates from different states met at the Constitutional Convention.
  • Well we can not just let this be fair for Northern states or just Southern states, this calls for a compromise.
  • That is true for some Southern states.. and not true for Northern states. If Congress controlled trade between states/countries it would benefit the Northern states because it would help business..
  • Our economies could crash without a fresh supply of slaves!
  • The Great Compromise: eventually was somewhat fair, A delegate from Connecticut, Roger Sherman, proposed a two-house legislature, consisting of a Senate and a House of Representatives. The Senate would have an equal number of representatives from each state. This would satisfy the states with smaller populations. The House of Representatives would include one representative for each 30,000 individuals in a state. This pleased states with larger populations
  • The delegates also faced another issue, what did slaves count as? Of course Southern states said that slaves should be counted as a person (because they had many slaves), but the Northern states argued that slaves were property- not a person so they shouldn't be counted in the population.. this created the 3/5 Compromise
  • The Slave Trade Compromise: Northern and southern delegates agreed to this compromise- Congress could control trade but not tax exports or interfere with the slave trade for 20 years. There was also another part to this called the fugitive slave clause¨ this was the agreement that escaped slaves had to be returned to their owners, even if caught in a free state.
  • And here are 3 reasons why it is a good thing that the states ratified the constitution: 1. Because it established our government, 2. The Articles of Confederation was not a strong enough way of government: inability of Congress to impose taxes, 3. Out of the constitution came compromises that somewhat ended arguments between states.
