Rainsford and Whitney are on a yacht going to Rio, to go jaguar hunting. After Whitney goes to bed Rainsford starts smoking his pipe, then, hears three gunshots coming from the island. Rainsford stupidly stands of the rail to hear more clearly.
Rainsford drops his pipe and reaks for it, but he fell in, he tried to swim after the yacht but it was no use. Rainsford keeps swimming hoping to find a shore and he shore did. He climbed up the rocky terrain the find a house, on his way to the bright house he finds a lot of blood.
He moves off and gets to the house and knocks of the door. This huge guy opens the door and puts a gun the Rainsford's chest. General Zaroff told his men to go away because he recognized Rainsford, he also invited him in. They both start talking about hunting and how Zaroff is hunting this big game on the island.
Turns out what Zaroff is hunting is people, and he wanted Rainsford to go with him. Rainsford was terrified of this idea, Zaroff begins to tell he where he gets the people from. At first Zaroff wants Rainsford to go hunting with him, but when Rainsford did not want to go Zaroff wanted to hunt him.
Rainsford gets released onto the hunting ground and begins making a very hard trail to follow. Rainsford tried the most complicated traps he had learned from his years of experience. None of them was a match for Zaroff and his pack of dogs. Zaroff lost dogs and his best man Ivan, nut he was determined to win.
Rainsford wasn't done after being chased by Zaroff and his dogs, he decided swimming to the General's house would be better. He swam back to the house and hid in the curtains. When Zaroff discovered him they made a deal the man who won the duel would get to sleep in a wonderful bed. To quote the author, "He had never slept in a better bed, Rainsford decided.
