  • The Whig Party was formed in 1834 by Andrew Jackson. By the time of the Compromise of 1850, the party split between antislavery and pro slavery. 
  • 4.) What year did Bleeding Kansas take place?
  • The New York Tribune was founded in 1841. In this newspaper Greeley expressed his opinions over the nations problems as well as his stance on slavery. It soon became the most popular in the nation.
  • 5.) When did James Buchanan defeat John C. Fremont and Millard Fillmore?
  • My presidency lasted from 1857 to 1861. I was a democrat. 
  • The Free Soil Party formed August 9, 1848. It was formed by failed supporters of the Wilmot Proviso and members of the Whig Party.
  • 6.) When did the Know-Nothing Party split because of slavery?
  • We need to protect out jobs!!
  • Immigrants don't belong here
  • Bleeding Kansas took place May 30, 1854. The territory became a battleground for violent confrontations.
  • Buchanan defeated both Fremont and Fillmore in the 1856 election on November 4th. He won  with 146 electoral votes and Fillmore in second with 114. 
  • The Know-Nothing Party split November 6, 1860 when they refused to take a position on slavery and split by the election of 1860.
