  • Nelson Mandela was a Lawyer and was born during the time of Apartheid, as he grew up he became brave and fearless leader in the fight to end Apartheid, he started to become more involved in groups and in the action to change the country of south Africa.  Because of his actions the white politicians who were working t ensure that racial segregation law stayed the same saw him as a danger.  He was eventually arrested and given a life sentence when he was accused of trying to overthrow the government.

  • Nelson Mandela was in prison for 27 years, he became the symbol of resistance to Apartheid and also the focal point of  protests in movements both in Africa and around the world. In 1991 he was finally released from prison due the the pressure put on the government by other countries.

  • Nelson Mandela continued to campaign to end apartheid through talks with the national party which earned him and De klerk (who was the south african president and leader of the national party) the Noble peace prize.

  • In 1994 south Africa held its very first multi-racial parliamentary elections in history. About 22 million south Africans turned up to cast ballots to elect nelson Mandela as south Africa’s first ever black president. People from all races voted in this election, The African national congress won and Nelson Mandela became the president.
  • On the fifth anniversary of Mr Mandela’s release, he visited the prison on Robben Island, where he spent 18 years imprisoned.
  • In 1999 Nelson Mandela retired from politics but he announced his retirement from public life in 2004. In 2002 he became the vocal advocate of AIDS awareness and treatment programs.  Mr Mandela was admitted to hospital in January 2001. He repeatedly suffered from respiratory infection and his lungs were said to have been damaged while working in prison. He passed away on 5th December 2013 at home.
