In 1587, 116 English colonists started a settlement on an island off the coast of North Carolina called Roanoke.

The colonists were facing a harsh winter so Governor White set sail back for England to get more supplies.
Unbeknownst to the colonists England was at war with Spain and queen Elizabeth The First was not letting any of her ships out of port, so Governor White was not able to return until three years later. When he did finally did get back the colonists were missing.
