UDL online storyboard

Storyboard Text

  • UDL is a structure to make teaching and learning better for all people based on science about how people learn (Center for Applied Special Technology, 2013)
  • Universal Design For Learning ONLINE
  • UDL was developed after universal design in architecture was used to create better environments for people with physical needs (Meyer & Rose, 2014)
  • Students need to have easy access to all aspects of an on-line course (Tobin, 2014).
  • Online classes are often recycled, boring regular classes. (Tobin, 2014).
  • Need
  • Online classes need to reach all learners and keep them engaged (Tobin, 2014).
  • What does the research say?  Who is researching? How are people learning about UDL? Anyone else wondering about online classes?
  • Researchers: Gagne, Fenrich, Rao, Meyer, Rose, Tobin, Burgstahler and more...
  • Center for Applied Special Technology (CAST)
  • Office of Educational Technology
  • Problem: UDL doesn't account for issues other than brain research and learning  (Educase, 2015).
  • Problem: Technology is expensive (CAST, 2013).
  • Problem: Teachers and Administrators don't understand that UDL helps more students access  standards, but doesn't lower standards.
  • Problem: UDL isn't promoted as best practices for all students.
  • Problem: IT departments have trouble coping with the increase in technology (Educase, 2015)
  • How did we get the information about UDL?
  • How do we make sure more teachers know about this?
  • How do we get more online teachers to try UDL?
  • UDL came out of universal design for architecture for disabilities (CAST, 2013).
  • Center for Applied Special Technology helps educators and educational organizations learn about UDL
  • Commercialization
  • 1990's: Least restrictive environment requirements place more students with disabilities in the regular classroom.
  • Consultants from CAST train teachers in the use of UDL (CAST, 2013).
  • All students need access to learning and technology can help (CAST, 2013).
