  • The British run the government now?  That's not great.

  • We can't vote so I am going to form The ANC to protest.
  • The British take over and also had power over diamond and gold production.  The South African war began in 1899 and lasted 3 years with the British on top.
  • Revolution
  • While People were peacfully protesting, and Police shot 69 of tem in the back in 1960. 
  • The whole over the South African government was controlled by white people who created a law called apartheid.  Apartheid forced all races to develop separately and nonwhites couldn't vote.
  • Recovery
  • Nelson Mandela was freed from prison and was voted in as President.
  • All races decided to join the African National Congress or the ANC which was led by Nelson Mandela who made sure all protest were peaceful.  Their goal was to protest, march and strike against apartheid.
  • The Violence started on March 21, 1960 in Sharpeville the police shot 69 blacks that were participating in a protest.  Mandela answered violence with violence which led to the government banning the ANC and other antiapartheid organizations.  Mandela arrested.
  • The President F.w. de Klerk was elected in 1989. He lifted a 30 year ban on antiapartheid rallies and freed the organizations and Nelson Mandela who later was voted in as President.  While Nelson was in office, South Africa was hit with a big grade epidemic of AIDS which led to Mandela's retirement in 1999.
