  • Right now in  Australia there are 150 electorates. Each electorate has 8500 votes which they vote for a representative  for the house of Parliament
  • Candidate 1
  • Canidate 2
  • candidate 5
  • This is the Ballot Paper, it is what Australia uses to vote.  People have 2 options on the voting paper. Fist they can just vote for the  parties ( A + B PARTY ) From their 1st preference to their last. If hey vote for one of these they are happy for that  party to choose their representative.
  • Candidate 1
  • Canidate 2
  • Candidate 4
  • candidate 5
  • The second option is for them to vote for a representative from the parties  from their 1st preference  to their last.
  • Candidate 1
  • Canidate 2
  • Candidate 4
  • candidate 5
  • The votes are then added up and placed on this graph. This graph represents how many votes each candidate received. The red line is the Quota, this line represents 801 votes. A candidate needs 801 votes to be elected to the senate. Therefore Candidate 2 has been elected.
  • Candidate 3
  • Candidate 4
  • Because Candidate 2 had more than 801 votes they add them to the other candidates who were 2nd reference. These are called transfer votes.
  • Candidate 3
  • If there still is not a candidate that has reached the Quota  then they eliminate the lowest candidate which is candidate 3 and transfer their 2nd preference votes on to the other candidates. This cycle keeps going until one candidate reaches the Quota. That means that Candidate 4 received the second senate spot.
  • Candidate 3
