  • This isn't right or fair for children or mentally ill
  • Dorothea Dix visited hundreds of prisons wondering why  the mentally were thrown in jail with   criminals.    She also visited debtors prison for those who owed money but most didn't owe more than $20 but had no way to make the money needed to pay.
  • Dorothea wondered why children were thrown in jail for minor theft with adult criminals accused or major crimes and mentally ill who  didn't even commit a crime.
  • Our prisons punish the mentally ill very harshly and necessarily
  • Dorothea  spent the next 2 years gathering her information about what she had seen in the prisons.
  • Lawmakers were so  shocked by everything that Dorothea had seen and written about them that they took a vote to build public asylums.
  • Dorothea  continued to campaign for prison reform for the rest of her life until she died in 1887.
  • Dorothea Dix showed the government how bad their prisons were and encouraged them to not but debtors in prison make a different justice system for kids and outlawed cruel punishments.
