Communists used massive repression to maintain their powers after the Soviet troops crushed their reform movements. People had continued to oppose government but had no success.
After crowds as large as 500,000 people were forming, the Communist government collapsed. Vaclev Havel, who had played an important role in bringing down the government, became the president.

After the new government was set in place, old ethnic conflicts arose. The two national groups, Czechs and Slovaks, made a peaceful division of the country and they split. Michal Kovak was elected the president of Slovakia.
