Conflict: Pony vs Socs
Character: Darry & Pony
Character: Johnny & Pony
Johnny is not dead.
Pony is affected by the Socs vs Greaser conflict. One example is that two of his gang members die because of this conflict. Right after the rumble, Johnny dies, and almost immediately after that, Dally dies. Both Johnny and Dally die, and it really hurts Pony. Right after their deaths, Pony said this: "I was lousing up my schoolwork" (169). He ends up denying that Dally and Johnny ever died, and he gets really bad grades and cannot focus on anything.
Darry really affects Ponyboy's 'life'. For example, when Pony gets home late, Darry and Pony argue, and Darry hits him. "Darry wheeled around and slapped me so hard that it knocked me against the door" (50). This causes Pony to run away with Johnny, which in turn basically makes Pony into a new character. Pony gets stronger on that trip to the church, but Johnny dies because of it, and that really hurts Pony as well.
Johnny really affects Ponyboy's 'life'. For example, when they run away to the church together, Johnny makes Pony see that he's tough, and then when Johnny gets put into the hospital and dies, that is what really hurts Pony. After Johnny dies, Pony really does not believe it. "'He isn't dead,' I said to myself. 'He isn't dead.'" (150). This causes Pony to really not have any regard for himself, and it makes him screw up in a bunch of different ways, like with his grades.
