It was July 11, the sky was shining and the birds were chirping. Everything was great, or so I thought. On this day my family and I were returning from a trip to Oklahoma.
When we landed my grandpa picked us up and brought us to a welcome back dinner. My Nonna had been so excited for to come that she would ask when we were coming every 5 minutes. So, when we did't get a call or response we were very worried.
While we were on the way home my grandpa was acting really weird. He told us that right after he dropped us off he would go to check on her. After 3 hours of waiting for him to call and give us an update we just assumed that she was fine. I guess he had not gone straight there, he had stopped downtown first.
After about 4 hours of waiting we got a call from him. He told us to come to MUSC right away. When we got there all of our other family members were also there. I got to go back to her room after waiting for a hour to see her. She was in very bad condition and she could not open her eyes or swallow.
She stayed at MUSC until she could get better enough for rehab. When Nona finally got better enough to go to Rehab she went to a place in West Ashley called NHC which was a lot of traveling for me and my family. She has gotten very better since then and can now swallow pure food and open her eyes fully.
There is no resolution to this story yet, and I do not think there ever will be. I hope Nona will get better enough to one day come home but we do not think that will be happening any time soon. All we can do is hope for the best for her.
