King Henry IV
Pope Gregory VII
I now appoint you Bishop.
This is a story of the conflict between King Henry IV and Pope Gregory VII. They wanted the power of Bishops.
I heard what you tried to do... And now I want you out
The problem began when the Pope appointed a bishop that the king wasn't happy with.
When the king found out what he had appointed this Bishop, the king tried to persuade the western Bishops to overthrow the pope.
I lift your excommunication
When the pope heard this, he excommunicated the king. If you died while you were excommunicated, or banned, from the church when you die you wouldn't be able to go to heaven. This was really bad for the king because this also affected his subjects in his kingdom.
After this, the king had to wait 3 days in the snow before the pope even talked to him.
After humiliating the king, the pope removed the king's excommunication... Therefore the pope won.
