Storyboard Text

  • 1824: The Corrupt Bargain
  • If you promote me to Secretary of State, I'll make you president in the upcoming election.
  • 1828: The Next Election
  • Thank you, people of the United States, for electing your true president!
  • Now I can officially improve the government for the common man!
  • 1828 Continued: Spoiled is He
  • Alright, out with the old, in with the new!
  • John Quincy Adams receives a deal from Speaker-of-the-House, Henry Clay.
  • 1828-1833: To Null or Not to Null
  • Our Union! It must be preserved!
  • The results are in: after campaigning as "The People's President," democrat Andrew Jackson has achieved his goal.
  • 1830-1838: Unfortunate Roads
  • They said this isn't fair!
  • Jackson takes advantage of his new position and replaces the official presidential cabinet with his "kitchen cabinet" that consists of his friends (this is known as the spoils system).
  • 1832-1837: The Bank Battle
  • National Banks are unconstitutional!
  • After a high tariff bill upset the south, Jackson's vice president John C Calhoun allowed them to nullify it. This resulted in disputes between them over whether the federal government or states rights were more important. Here's one from a dinner party in 1830.
  • The Union, next to our liberty most dear. It can only be preserved by respecting the rights of the states.
  • Indian Removal Act of 1830 was passed which forced many native tribes in the US to move further west. However, the Cherokee tribe refused and went to the Supreme Court which rules in their favor. However, they'll have to move on the trail of tears in 1838 after a fake treaty is signed.
  • I'm not enforcing that, it's Marshall's job.
  • Jackson is fighting against the Second Bank of the United States which he and many others declare unconstitutional. However, this will prove to not be the best idea after the Panic of 1837 when the country will suffer an economic depression.
