  • What is Fluency?
  • Reading fluency is reading with accuracy, effortlessness, and automaticity on a grade appropriate passage with suitable volume, pitch, stress and phrasing. 
  • It is hard to comprehend what I am reading when I am reading word by word.
  • Why Fluency?
  • Yea, fluency is very important. If I can't read most of the words smoothly, I have a hard time understanding what I'm reading.
  • Characteristics of Fluency Instruction
  • 1. Explicit fluency instruction 2. Fluency modeled 3. Practice 4. Access to appropriately challenging reading materials 5. Oral and silent reading 6. Monitoring and accountability 7. Wide and repeated reading 
  •   There are 7 characteristics of evidence-based fluency instruction and practice. 30% of time should be spent on instruction and 70% should be spent on practice.
  • Evidence-Based Teaching Strategy
  • Evidence-based teaching strategies include repeated readings, choral reading, partner reading, and scaffolded silent reading.
  • Assessing Fluency
  • When assessing fluency, teachers should consider... 1. accurate and effortless decoding of text 2. reading rate (wpm) 3. use of volume, stress, pitch, and juncture 4. phrasing of text
  • Fluency unlocks the door to reading comprehension for students.
