The Japanese didn't colonize very nicely. In fact it was quite harsh often times and they would hurt and kill people. This was important because if the Japanese didn't colonize they knew they would lose.
This was important because this is what led the Japanese to bomb Pearl Harbor. We were Japan's main source of oil and steel so when we made and embargo on them they had to attack. We did this because they were a threat to attack.
