1781, James Armistead was a slave. He was also a spy in the American Revolution. He was sent by Marquis de Lafayette. He was a huge part in the Revolutionary war.
He was well trusted by General Cornwallis. One day James returned to Lafayette saying the the British sent him as a British spy! On the day of surrender, Cornwallis stayed in his headquarters.
Cornwallis went to Lafayette´s headquarters, where he saw James in an American uniform . He trusted James so much for him to be an American spy. After the war, James received a certificate from Lafayette saying he has done well. Afterwards, he wanted to be a free man. William Armistead want some money because he lost his worker. James was now a free man. He changed his last name to Lafayette. In 1824, James sat for his portrait. The end.
