  • the war against france isn't going well. I need you to increase the poll tax as I need more money to pay the soldiers.
  • I can't believe they are increasing the poll tax! Firstly we have to do work service for nothing secondly after the Black Death we wouldn't be paid any higher this is outrageous. This is the last straw!
  • its time for justice! burn everything! anyone who won't join us kill them!
  • Richard 2nd increased the poll tax significantly to pay for more soldiers and for weapons. The poll tax was the same for everyone and for the serf's this would be almost impossible to pay.

  • The peasants were extremely angry and this was the last straw for them. The Black Death made it so there was more work to do but a law made it so they couldn't earn anymore and work service was unfair as you had to work for free sometimes! The peasants decided to do something about it.

  • Kentish rebels went around the east of England destroying towns for justice for peasants. Then they asked ex-soldier Wat Tyler to lead the revolt and he agreed.
  • Then they freed priest John Ball who had been locked up by the archbishop of Canterbury for having a different opinion on religion than what the church taught. John preached to the peasants telling them that God intended for everyone to be equal
  • On 13th June 1381 someone opened the gates of London to the serf's and 100,000 peasants entered London.
  • Once in London they went straight to Savoy palace where John of Gaunt lived and attacked it.
