  • Storyboard of "The Lions of Little Rock" by Kristin Levine Storyboard by Divya Fitzgerald All dialogue actual quotes from book; descriptions by Divya Fitzgerald "The Lions of Little Rock" is about a white family, the Nisbetts, who live in Little Rock during the segregated 1950's.
  • Problem
  • Liz isn't coming back because she's a negro.
  • You're kidding!
  • Marlee, the main character, is very shy and afraid of heights. She compares everybody to a drink (for example, her sister Judy is an ice-cold Coca Cola, her mother is strong black tea, and her father is milk) and counts prime numbers when she is nervous. Sally is her best friend, even though she's bossy and pushy. Marlee says about her, "Sally is cough syrup; she tastes bad, but my mother insists she's good for me."
  • Problem
  • Yes.
  • Are you scared?
  • [it] Must have been here since this place was a working quarry. Tonight we'll have some fun for sure.
  • On the first day of school, the new girl, Liz, comes up to Marlee, who invite her to sit down. Later Marlee invites her to be partners on a project and Liz helps her become less shy and stand up for herself. At first, Marlee is unsure about Liz. "Was she really as wholesome as whole milk? Or was she like a shot of whiskey given to you by your older cousin? I couldn't place her, and it made me nervous." she says. But later, she decides that Liz is "a cup of warm milk with a dash of cinnamon."
  • Rising Action
  • What are you saying?
  • The external problem is that Liz is exposed as being black passing for white and can't come back to the school. At first, Marlee is told she has a stomach flu but then Sally reveals that she has seen Liz in the black part of town with a black boy. There is also an internal conflict, because Marlee has a crush on JT and JT knows it, so he has charmed her into doing his math homework. Marlee is mad at him because he is cheating off her but she still likes him, and thinks of him as a cup of hot chocolate with whipped cream and sprinkles on top.
  • That's ridiculous!
  • James-Thomas "JT" Dalton
  • Liz and Marlee continue to meet and try to stay friends, despite the danger of being found associating by segregationists. At first they meet at the zoo but then they start meeting at the abandoned quarry, which is called the rock crusher. Marlee is sad because since the high schools are closed to try to prevent integration, her sister Judy has been sent to stay with her grandma. Liz and Marlee make a deal to help each other cheer up: They will do things they are scared of with the other's help. Liz will catch crawfish (which creep her out) and Marlee will climb a tree, despite her fear of heights.
  • While Marlee and Liz are climbing a tree at the abandoned quarry, the Rock Crusher, people arrive and Marlee climbs down to investigate. JT and his older brother, Red are there and they start messing with Marlee. When she tries to get away, she trips over a box of dynamite. Red steals Marlee's bag and the dynamite and says he is going to hurt Liz's family with it. Marlee is worried that Red will actually try, because he is a cruel person and she describes him as castor oil because of how nasty he is to everybody.
  • Raymond "Red" Edward Dalton
  • I'm saying, we'll find your little friend and show her whole family what we think of ni***rs who try to pass.
