"I had fettered him to the granite" Fortunato had reached the end of the niche. He found his progress arrested by the rock and stood stupidly bewildered.

"There was then a long and obstinate silence." Once Montressor had laid the second tier, and the third tier, and the fourth, he heard the furious vibrations of the chain.

"I ceased my labors and sat down upon the bones" Montressor realizes what he was doing wrong and began to break down the brick wall and save Fortunato from suffocation.
Once Montressor saved Fortunato from suffocation they both have decided not to speak of the incident and go their seperate ways.
