Storyboard Text

  • New York newspaper editor, John O' Sullivan giving a speach.
  • ¨It is our Manifest Destiny to overspread and possess the whole of the continent!
  • The phrase "manifest destiny" brought hope to America.
  • Look! Gold!
  • Wow!
  • During the 1830's, some Americans found gold on Indian land, and they really wanted that gold.
  • But, Sir, we have treaties with the Indians!
  • President Andrew Jackson passed the Indian Removal Act, allowing the military to force Indians away from their homeland.
  • Behold! The Indian Removal Act!
  • I do what I want.
  • The U.S. gave Indians until a certain point to leave their land. Some didn't want to leave, and that ended badly for them, being forced away from their homes with nothing.
  • Get outta here!
  • Why us?!
  • In the 1830's we had about two-thirds the space we have now, and all of that happened in just about one lifetime. Meaning some U.S. citizens were alive to see the entire expansion of the United States. This was a truly incredible time period.
