509 BC- ROME BECOMES A REPUBLIC
My people, the time of having a king rule over us is over. Now our beautiful city will be rules by elected officials! Let the gods give us the ability rule our city with praise and glory!
45 BC- JULIUS CAESAR
My dear people, we are so close to winning! Come with me and CROSS THE RUBICON!
The city of Rome is founded. Legend has it that the twin sons of Mars, the god of war, named Romulus and Remus founded the city. Romulus killed Remus and became ruler of Rome and named the city after himself. Rome was ruled by kings for the next 240 years.
44 BC- THE END OF CAESAR
Why did the Senate kill me? I ONLY wanted what's best for Rome! WHY?!
Rome becomes a republic after the last king is overthrown and Rome is now ruled by elected officials called senators. There is now a constitution with laws and a republican government.
27 BC- AUGUSTUS CAESAR
Have no fear my people, I am here. Rome will rise from the ashes under my control! BOW DOWN TO YOUR NEW EMPEROR!
Julius Caesar becomes the first dictator of Rome. Once Caesar makes his famous Crossing of the Rubicon and defeats Pompey in a civil war, he becomes the supreme ruler of Rome. This sign shows the end of the Roman Republic and the start to the Roman Empire
64 AD- ROME IN FLAMES
Julius Caesar is assassinated on the Ides of March by the Senate. After the assassination, they hoped to bring back the republic, but instead civil war breaks out.
The Roman Empire begins once Augustus Caesar rises up, saving the city from chaos.
Much of Rome burns. It was said that Emperor Nero watched the city burn while playing a lyre.
