The Indian Removal act was passed in the year 1830, establishing Indian territory in modern day Oklahoma. Tribes were forced to sign a document that officially stated they would move, but the Cherokee tribe refused.
The Trail of tears was a time when over 15,000 members of the Cherokee tribe were ordered to be marched all they way to Indian Territory from Georgia. It is estimated that 4,000 Cherokees died along the journey from various causes.
