John really is the son of a Priest, he did not die from the Metal... He is going to be a strong man.
Father! I have not died! I..I held the metal!
Beginning the Journey
Hey John, just a little warning-
Love you too, Dad. Wish me luck!
The Crossing of the Threshold
"Ohh We're half way there- AHHHHH Headin to Place of the Gods!"
John Starts the Journey in the past, telling the story about being the son of a priest. ("My father is a priest; I am the son of a priest...He was glad I was the son of a priest...But when I boasted or wept without a reason, he punished me more strictly than my brothers. That was right.") John is brought to be tested by his father to see if he is capable of being a priest, by holding what they call, metal, which kills anyone not worthy of priesthood. ("Then my father came out with the metal - a good, strong piece... he gave me the metal to hold - i took it and did not die.")
The Special World
Hmm.. "UBTRES." Must be Cousin to "ASHING"
Before John's sets out, his father gives him a warning on his dreams about the Place of the Gods ("I saw and told what I saw...a great Dead Place and in it the gods walking...'This is a very strong dream," he said." It may eat you up.' "), telling him that if they do not eat him up, he will be a great priest. John then receives purification and begins his journey by setting out through the forest, he get's curious when he spots the Place of the Gods, which can only be crossed by Raft. ("Then I raised my eyes and looked south. It was there, the Place of the Gods...I knew that I should have to cross the river and walk in the places of the gods, although the gods ate me up.")
The Test of Knowledge
How Can soMMethhhing THIS goood, kiiill us?!?
John begins to sing a song that is almost like a prayer(" 'Now I go to the Place of the Gods, I shall not return...My body is painted for death and my limbs weak, but my heart is big as I go to the Place of the Gods!' "), and begins to ride the heavy current to the place they told him to never go; The Place of the Gods. ("And always the current took me nearer to the Place of the Gods, and the huge ruins rose before my eyes.")
I'm gonna get me an EASY Dinner!
John explores the Place of the Gods, Preparing himself for any sort of danger the priests in his village warned him about, but begins to notice some slight variations from the truth that these priests claim is right. ("It is not true either, what some of our priests say, that it is an island covered with fogs and enchantments. It is not...There should have been the wailing of spirits and the shrieks of demons, but there were not...The towers are not all broken...") He comes across odd buildings of what seem like homes for the Gods named, "UBTRES" and "ASHING." ("There was also the shattered image of a man or a god...His name was ASHING...I thought it wise to pray to ASHING, though I do not know that god.")
John enters and stays the night at one of the Gods' Towers to search an eat of their food, curious onto why such meals were prohibited by his elders. ("It is known that the gods did not hunt as we do...when I was a child and foolish, I opened such a jar and tasted it and found the food sweet. But my father found out and punished me for it strictly, for, often, that food is death....I had long gone past what was forbidden, and I entered the likeliest towers, looking for the food of the gods.") When he began to eat, he noticed that the food did not kill him like they claimed it would. ("I ate only the fruits from the jars... There was drink, too...the drink of the gods was strong and made my head swim. After I had eaten and drunk, I slept on the top of a stone, my bow at my side.")
John Encounters a wild animal, A Wolf, who sits and taunts him when he awakes. ("Looking down from where I lay, I saw a dog sitting on his haunches...as big as a wolf...he just sat there as if he were laughing. I did not like that. When I reached for a stone to throw, he moved swiftly out of the way of the stone...He was not afraid of me...") As John keeps on moving, the pack follows behind him in the shadows, and tries to attack him when he runs off into a building and shuts a door onto them, preventing their attacks. ("When I had reached the god-road, I saw that there were others behind him...When I went into the dead-house...doubtless they thought they would have a fine hunt...I had just found a door I could open when the dogs decided to rush. Ha! They were surprised when I shut the door in their faces.")
