  • Then, on February 15, 1898,mysterious explosion sank the
  • After that, the American Public
  • War!
  • troops and its best general Valeriano Weyler to Cuba. Americans wrote exaggerated stories about events in Cuba.
  • Following the decision for peace, the US sent a
  • "Spain must follow these demands, an end to reconcentration camps, a truce in Cuba, Cuban independence, and the compensation for the USS Maine"
  • USS Maine, an American Warship in Havana, Cuba .This killed more than 250 American Sailors.
  • After that,the US signed the Treaty of Paris
  • Sign this Treaty!
  • called for war but Mckinley said "We need to keep peace," and peace is maintained.
  • Finally, in return for a payment of
  • list of demands to Spain. This was the United States' last attempt for a peaceful solution. Spain agreed to all but the last of the demands.
  • with Spain in December, 1898. This gave Cuba independence and the US new territory.
  • $20 million, Spain gave the United States the Philippines, Guam, and Puerto Rico.
