Madame Loisel is a commoner with very little money, and often wishes she was wealthy with a higher social status.
Her husband receives a invitation to the ball. He goes to tell Loisel and she immediately complains on how she has nothing to wear in which she simply cannot go.
Loisel is deeply disappointed that she can not afford a nice piece of clothing to wear to the ball. Then all of a sudden her husband gives her some money to buy a beautiful dress that she can wear to formal affairs.
Madame Loisel finds the perfect dress and decides to buy it. Then she asked her husband for more money, eventhough she knew they did not have a lot. Continuing on, she borrowed a pearl necklace from her friend that went great with her dress.
Madame Losiel attended the ball, and when she did everyone stopped to stare, and wished to meet her. She felt like she was more than just a commoner, that she was beautiful and wealthy. When the night had come to an end, her and her husband went home by a carriage. However when she got home the necklace was missing, they searched for days and no sign of it, so they had to buy a replica in its place.
After buying the necklace, they went into debt and had to work for 10 long years to pay it off. One day Loisel stumbled across the lady she borrowed the necklace from and told her the truth. The necklace ended up being costume jewelry and the lady told them that they should have told her the truth to being with. All in all, Losiel learned that she should have accepted what she had and embraced it, instead of looking for happiness in wealth and fortune.
