The main character, Dexter, is introduced, and we find out that he daydreams about becoming wealthy like the men he caddies for. Dexter sees Judy Jones for the first time and is instantly infatuated with her, making her part of his winter dreams.
Dexter grows up and becomes wealthy off the string of laundries he has opened. He goes golfing with the wealthy men he use to caddy for, which allows him to feel like he has accomplished some of his goals. He sees Judy again, now a young woman, and he is taken in by her physical beauty. Later that evening, Dexter talks to her on the lake (she has driven up in her boat after escaping from a suitor who was at her house), and she invites him to dinner the following night.
Dexter goes to dinner at Judy’s house. Dexter is at first disappointed that Judy dressed so casually for dinner, but he soon overlooks it—the first of many times that Dexter would have to overlook Judy’s poor behavior. After dinner, Judy tells Dexter about her most recent boyfriend, who turned out to be poor. She asks Dexter about his background, and he confesses that he is very wealthy. The two begin kissing. Within three days, Dexter is completely in love with her and asks her to marry him.
