Uncle Luis is mad that papa and his family are moving to New Mexico, because their families had been living in Mexico their whole lives. They argued to the point of the grandma almost yelling at Uncle Luis, saying that Papa could live anywhere he wanted on his own with his family. So, with the new job Papa had gotten, the family moved to New Mexico, with the boy realizing that he was the real reason they were moving.
On his first day of school, the boy runs into Chango, who attempts to trip him while he enters the building, but he steps on Chango's leg instead, aggravating him. Then, the boy is introduced to the class, and told not to speak Spanish, or he will be punished.
Chango and his gang meet up with the boy and ask for him to step on Chango's foot again, threatening him. The boy tries to act like it wasn't him and that he doesn't know what they are talking about, but fails. One of the Chango's lackeys attempts to beat up the boy, but he dodges and counters every one of his attacks, sending the kid back, and Chango decides to invite the boy into his gang.
The quest for the boy was that he had to sneak them into the theater. Once he did, without being caught, the boys enjoys western and Mexican styled movies, and related to the characters and even some of the situations they had in reality. The boys continued to sneak into the theaters and watch the movies, one of their favorites being the Alamo battle. They didn't really like the american actors playing the roles of the heroes against the Mexicans or playing Mexicans themselves.
Soon, the boys, Los Indios, would terrorize one of the kids from anther school that they called, "The enemy." Chango and the boy chased the white kid and trapped him, when then Chango beat the kid up, the boys took off, leaving the other kid to lie in pain.
It ended up that the kid they beat up was the boy's neighbor, Denver! He for some reason hadn't told him mother about the incident, and both of their mothers were wanting them to go to the theaters to watch a movie, so the boy had to go with Denver. When he gets up with the gang, they almost get mad at him, but the boy ends up convincing Chango that Denver isn't an enemy, and the boys enjoy their favorite movies.
