  •                 Insanity
  • "Above all was the sense of hearing acute. I heard all things in the heaven and in the earth. I heard many things in hell."
  • This quote shows the central idea insanity because he's saying that he's hearing has gotten better and no human in reality could hear things in the heaven, earth, and hell so he thinks that he could hear it and thinking that, represents his insanity.
  •                 Insanity
  • This quote shows the central idea insanity because he's being nice to the old man but on the inside, he wants to kill him because of his eye and every night he goes into room and stalks him and getting ready to kill him and wanting to kill him represents his insanity.
  • "I was never kinder to the old man during the whole week before I killed him. And every night, about midnight, I turned the latch of his door and opened it."
  • Insanity
  • This quote shows the central idea insanity because he thinks he's hearing the old man's heart beat but in reality, no human can hear another human's heart beat so hearing the heart beat represents his insanity.
  • now, I say, there came to my ears a low dull, quick sound....I knew the sound well too. It was the beating of the old man's heart. It increased my fury as the beating of a drum stimulates the soldier.
  • Insanity
  • "The old man was dead. I removed the bed and examined the corpse. Yes, he was stone dead...The night waned, and i worked hastily, but in silence. First of all I dismembered the corpse. I cut off the head and all the arms and legs."
  • This shows the central idea insanity because after the narrator killed the old man, he cut off his arms and legs and hid it under the floor and no human in society does that.
  •                 Insanity
  • "I then took up tree planks from the flooring of the chamber, and deposited all between the scantlings. I then replaced the boards so cleverly, so cunningly, that no human eye, not even his, could have detected any thing wrong. There was nothing to wash out, no stain of any kind, no blood-spot, whatever.
  • This quote shows the central idea insanity because he puts the old man body parts under the floor just so he doesn't get caught and usually in reality, nobody puts body parts under the floor and his did it for no reason because the old man didn't hurt him.
  • "It grew louder, louder!..... Was it possible they heard not? Almighty God! no,! They heard!, they suspected!, they knew!, they were making a mockery of my horror!"
  • Insanity
  • This quote shows the central idea insanity because the narrator thinks the policemen could hear the old man's heart beat, but in reality, no human can hear what another human is hearing, so thinking that the policeman are, represnts his insanity.
