It was an ordinary day in the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory located in Washington Pl, in Manhattan, New York on March 25th, 1911.
Both Olivia and her mother worked in the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory, and Olivia sat in front of her mother. They had to work long hours every day to make as much as one dollar a week only.
A supervisor threw a cigarette into a rag bin. Without knowing, he walks away as a fire emerges in the bin.
AHHH! Fire! Fire! D-director, there is f-fire!
One of the female workers notice the fire, and reports it to the director, using the very limited English that she knows.
The other workers start to panic as the fire grew, while the director attempts to the put out the fire using a fire hose. However, he fails, due to the fact that the hose rotted and the valve was rusted.
The workers began running towards the only elevator that operated. The elevator could only hold 12 people at a time, so it had to make several trips. Olivia was able to get on the elevator and safely exited the building, however, the elevator shaft later broke and many of the workers fell to their deaths.
