  • Bleeding Kansas - Stephen Douglas proposed a bill called the Kansas-Nebraska act. It allowed Kansas and Nebraska to decide whether or not to be free or slave states by popular sovereignty. This caused Northerners and Southerners to go into Kansas wanting control over the territory, and violence erupted.
