  • Bleeding Kansas - Stephen Douglas proposed a bill called the Kansas-Nebraska act. It allowed Kansas and Nebraska to decide whether or not to be free or slave states by popular sovereignty.  This caused Northerners and Southerners to go into Kansas wanting control over the territory, and violence erupted.

  • Abraham Lincoln - In 1860, Abraham Lincoln won the election for U.S. president. He was against slavery, but believed in preserving the union first.

  • Harper's Ferry - John Brown and other white abolitionists raided the arsenal in Harper's Ferry to start an armed slave revolt. They were later captured and hanged.
