Reuven and his team begin the baseball game against the Hasids, Reuven foreshadows that this game will lead to something very important.
The game escalates and both sides are hungry for victory. Coach calls reuven up to pitch against the opposing teams best hitter, Danny Saunders. Danny hits the ball and nails Reuven right in the eye.
Reuven is rushed to the hospital and forced to rest there for a week, with the possibility that he may go blind. During this time, Danny visits and apologizes, the two become friends. Potok uses this even as a symbol that everything is about to change for Reuven.
Reuven begins visiting the synagogue of Danny's father (Reb) every shabbat, during these sessions Reb would grill Danny on his religious knowledge in front of the congregation. In his sermon, Reb uses imagery to entrance his viewers in the word of God.
Reuven's father suffers a heart attack and is hospitalized for several weeks. During this time, Reb insists that Reuven come live with them. For the dew weeks that Reuven does, he is an acceped member of the family.
